How THCI Helps

THCI Educational Resources

THCI offers the following curricula, online modules, workshops and conferences, CD-ROMs, videos, and reference materials to help train health care professionals, program directors and other faculty, students, and residents. These resources address the competency requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), particularly in the areas of Systems-based Practice and Practice-based Learning and Improvement.

These educational resources can be used on a stand-alone basis, in connection with specific courses and workshops, or as part of a fully integrated curriculum.

Curriculum Framework THCI Curriculum for Health Care Professionals A curriculum framework defining domains of knowledge and skills for the effective practitioner; these specific areas relate to the ACGME competencies, particularly Systems-based Practice and Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
Curriculum Guides and Teaching Materials Curriculum Guide on Managing Care: A Systems-based Approach
  • Describes a model rotation on managing care and provides teaching materials for 12 teaching sessions in community practices and at managed care organizations on relevant topics.
  • Includes instructional materials and techniques for demonstrating the tools and techniques of care management.
  • Teaching materials include objectives, slides, cases, readings, faculty notes.
  • 1. Case Management Identifies the applications, components, and processes of case management, and describes the role of the physician. Relates to ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice, Patient Care, and Interpersonal and Communication Skills.
    2. Disease Management Describes disease management and its components, and teaches about physician involvement in disease management programs. Relates to ACGME competencies of Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice, Patient Care, and Professionalism.
    3. MCO-Physician Contracting Explains important components of contract law that pertain to all types of contractual agreements and identifies the steps for a medical group to prepare for contracting with a health plan. Relates to ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice, Patient Care, and Professionalism.
    4. Patient Education and Health Education Reviews tools and techniques to help practitioners achieve desired outcomes of optimal health status for the patient and improved financial performance through cost-effective activities, including online resources. Relates to ACGME competencies of Patient Care, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Systems-based Practice, and Professionalism.
    5. Pharmacy Management Identifies the drivers of pharmacy utilization and cost trends; describes programs and initiatives to manage pharmacy costs and utilization. Relates to ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice and Patient Care.
    6. Population-based Care and Patient Management Helps practitioners develop strategies for individual patients and groups characterized as healthy, at-risk, acutely ill, or chronically ill; also discusses disease-specific care plans for groups and individuals. Relates to ACGME competencies of Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Systems-based Practice, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Patient Care, and Professionalism
    7. Practice Management Systems and Operations Differentiates between fee-for-service practice and managed care practice and describes strategies, tools and techniques for successful practice management. Relates to ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, and Interpersonal and Communication Skills.
    8. Provider Performance Reports Describes elements of reports provided to PCPs, specialists, and provider groups, and discusses how data are used to improve practice patterns. Relates to ACGME competencies of Practice-based Learning and Improvement and Systems-based Practice.
    9. Quality Assurance and Improvement Defines health care quality from the perspectives of different parties; identifies existing quality measurement systems, and tools and techniques to monitor and improve quality.     10. Referral Management Identifies factors that influence referral patterns, explores the relationships between primary care and specialist physicians, and describes tools and techniques for referral management.     11. Utilization Management in the MCO Defines utilization management (UM), describes the components of a UM program and its various techniques, and reviews important regulatory issues. Relates to ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice and Patient Care.
    12. Utilization Management in the Practice Describes utilization management and its key components as they apply to the practice setting and the decision-making of the individual physician.     Preparing Physicians-In-Training To Succeed (PPTS) A comprehensive curriculum designed to help program directors and other faculty integrate the principles and practices of managing care into residency training and medical school.

    Online modules Case-based, accredited modules authored by experts in their fields. Up-to-date, dynamic, and interactive moduleware that address important topics for physicians and other health care professionals. Accredited for physicians, nurses and pharmacists. Each module is excellent for faculty in providing effective introduction for residents, other trainees, and students.
    Definitions and Measurement of Quality Defines the elements of quality in health care and teaches how to adopt strategies to improve quality in practice. Relates to ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice and Practice-based Learning and Improvement.
    Quality Improvement Techniques Examines how quality improvement (QI) applies to physicians and other health care professionals in today's environment and teaches commonly used QI tools and techniques. Relates to ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, and Interpersonal and Communication Skills.
    Quality Oversight in the Marketplace Describes trends, key players, and methods in monitoring quality of health plans, delivery systems, and physician practices, including online reporting. Relates to ACGME competency of Systems-based Practice.
    Evidence-based Medicine Presents the rationale for and value of evidence-based medicine, and describes the steps in the process of using EBM in clinical decision-making. Relates to ACGME competencies of Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Medical Knowledge, and Patient Care.
    Clinical Guidelines Examines the purpose and utility of clinical guidelines and their integration in delivery systems and practice settings as an evidence-based approach to improving the processes and outcomes of care.     Case Management Explores the essential components of case management as an approach to achieving quality and cost outcomes, and examines the collaborative process involving physicians and case managers.     Referral Management Examines what referral patterns are, how they are measured, and the techniques for positively and actively influencing the referral process to improve quality and continuity of care.     Knowledge Assessment A 50-question self-scoring instrument that measures the respondent's familiarity with content drawn from THCI's Curriculum Framework.
    Managed Care Opinion Survey Designed to measure attitudes about approaches to managing care among practicing clinicians and clinicians-in-training.

  • Enables organizations and programs to accurately track, report, and analyze data gathered on their target learners.
  • Offers programs and institutions the ability to assess topic knowledge, relative performance, and compliance with assignments for individual learners and groups of learners.

  • Faculty Development/ Train-the-Trainer Programs Customized programs and conferences on competency based education and integrating and utilizing THCI resources to achieve competencies Interactive workshops taught by experts in the field to help program directors and faculty meet new requirements for training for effective practice in today's complex environment, with a particular focus on systems-based practice and practice-based learning and improvement.

    Emerging Specialty of Physician Leadership Half-day or full-day module that addresses the transitions required of all physicians as they take on new roles of leadership in a changing health care environment.
    Putting Quality into Practice Half-day or full-day program on ways to achieve high quality clinical care by drawing on proven quality improvement techniques.
    Patient Satisfaction - Measurement and Results Helps newly trained and practicing clinicians understand patient satisfaction reports by reviewing the difference between patient reports and patient satisfaction; summaries of current satisfaction surveys; results of recent studies on the relationship between satisfaction and other factors, such as health status and demographics, physician characteristics, and health plan characteristics.
    Videos and CD-ROMs Physician-Patient Communication (Video) This program reviews problems associated with patients' lack of compliance with treatment plans, barriers to compliance, and risks that are associated with deficiencies in physician communication. Participants also learn the techniques for applying the patient-centered approach to maximize patient satisfaction and compliance, and behavior change strategies to increase. Relates to ACGME competencies of Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Patient Care, Systems-based Practice, and Professionalism.
    Understanding Managed Care: Learning the Essentials through Case Presentations (CD-ROM) A 4-module, self-paced CD-ROM that establishes a framework for understanding the basic principles and practices of managing care effectively with emphasis on the changing role of the physician, sharing financial risk, allocating budgeted resources and improving quality. Relates to ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice, Practice-based Learning and Improvement and Patient Care.

    Making Care Decisions at the End of Life (CD-ROM Series)

    A three-part series of trigger vignettes plus a facilitator's guide intended to increase the knowledge and comfort of clinicians and impart interactive and communication skills for making care decisions at the end of life. Relates to ACGME competencies of Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Patient Care, Professionalism, and Systems-based Practice.
    Online Articles Lessons from Three Healthcare Markets Proceedings from a Symposium for Healthcare Leaders: a 57-page report summarizing a THCI program on the evolution of three mature managed care markets and the implications for the nation's health care system.
    Online Library Topical Issues Review articles with references, written by THCI, that delve into timely topics and pressing issues within the changing health care environment.
