Health Care Management Assessment Tools
It is increasingly important that physicians and other clinicians understand the health care system so that they can advocate effectively for their patients, and lead health system improvement efforts.

Knowledge of the health care system and care management techniques for patients within a complex delivery system is an integral part of today's clinical training programs. As part of its Online Learning Campus, Tufts Health Care Institute has developed three self-assessment instruments to assess knowledge and attitudes in this area.

Online Content Pre/Post Assessment

Tufts Health Care Institute's Online Content Pre/Post Assessment is a multiple choice questionnaire measuring knowledge of content presented in the THCI Online Learning Modules. The content relates to health care quality, care management, evidence-based medicine, and other elements of the competencies of Systems-based Practice and Practice-based Learning and Improvement. Residents can complete the instrument as a pre- and post-test before and after viewing the modules and other Online Campus resources . Programs can use the results to assess gaps and document gains in knowledge over time, for individuals and for the program overall.

Health System Knowledge Assessmentİ — (Version 2.0)

Tufts Health Care Institute's online Health System Knowledge Assessment© is a 50-question, self-scoring instrument that measures the respondent's familiarity with content drawn from THCI's Curriculum Framework and related to the ACGME competencies of Systems-based Practice and Practice-based Learning and Improvement.

For individuals, the Health System Knowledge Assessment is a way of testing their familiarity with the health care system and techniques of managing care and improving quality for patients and populations.

For GME programs and educational institutions, THCI recommends that the Health System Knowledge Assessment be administered prior to a course of study on Systems-based Practice and Practice-based Learning and Improvement as a diagnostic indicator and pre-test. Following the use of THCI's online resources and/or other related curricula, the Health System Knowledge Assessment can be repeated as a post-test in order to assess respondents' acquisition of new knowledge.

THCI's Health System Knowledge Assessment was developed by content experts, reviewed by separate content experts and refined based on focus groups with residents and clinicians. Click here for review of validity testing. Data collected from Version 1.1 will help THCI to further enhance the assessment instrument.

Care Management Opinion Surveyİ

Tufts Health Care Institute's Care Management Opinion Surveyİ (MCOS) is a questionnaire designed to measure attitudes among clinicians and clinicians-in-training towards aspects of practice associated with managed care. The questionnaire includes closed-ended opinion statements concerning changes in the health care system, the involvement of health plans, and techniques for managing the care of patients and populations. THCI also makes the survey available to faculty as an instructional tool to measure and discuss students' attitudes about the system in which they will practice.
