Harris A. Berman, MD is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Tufts Health Plan. The health plan, headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, is a leading managed care company in New England. During his thirteen years as CEO, Tufts has grown from 60,000 to over 1,000,000 members.
Before joining Tufts, Dr. Berman co-founded the Matthew Thornton Health Plan in Nashua, NH, one of the first HMOs in New England. He served initially as the HMO’s Medical Director beginning in 1971, then as its Executive Director. In 1995 he co-founded the Tufts Health Care Institute, and he continues to serve as the Institute’s co-chairman. He also serves as chairman of Affiliated Health Information Networks of New England, and as a director of the Massachusetts Association of HMOs, and the American Association of Health Plans. In addition, Dr. Berman has international experience as a Peace Corps Physician and a consultant to the U.S. Agency for International Development in several countries.
A graduate of Harvard College, Dr. Berman received his medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, followed by residency training at the Harvard Medical Service of Boston City Hospital and the Tufts-New England Medical Center and an Infectious Disease fellowship at Tufts-New England Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Clinical Professor of Medicine as well as of Community Health at Tufts University School of Medicine. |
