Deeb Salem, MD is the Chief Medical Officer and Physician-in-Chief of the Tufts-New England Medical Center Hospital, the principal teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine. The hospital is a 515 bed, inpatient and ambulatory care facility with over 4,900 employees and an active medical staff of 547 physicians and surgeons.
Dr. Salem has had a long and distinguished career as an academic cardiologist. He served as Chief of Cardiology at Tufts-New England Medical Center from 1987 to 1995. In 1987, he was appointed Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM). In January of 1999, Dr. Salem was appointed the Sheldon M. Wolff Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at TUSM.
Dr. Salem has been President of the New England Cardiovascular Society as well as Vice-President of the Massachusetts Affiliate of the American Heart Association. He has been President-elect of the Massachusetts Affiliate of the American Heart Association and was recently elected as the first President of the New England Affiliate of the American Heart Association. His academic accomplishments include over 100 scientific publications. He is recognized as a national expert in coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the New England Affiliate of the American Heart Association and Tufts Health Care Institute. In 1995, he was listed in Boston Magazine as one of "Boston’s Best" physicians.
Dr. Salem received his BA and MD from Boston University (six year medical program) in 1968. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.
