Herbert Waxman, MD graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1958 and from Harvard Medical School, magna cum laude, in 1962. He served as a medical intern (1962-63) and resident (1963-64, 1966-67) at the Massachusetts General Hospital and as Hematology Fellow at Barnes Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine (1967-68). He was a Research Associate at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health from 1964-1966. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty Board of Hematology.
From 1968-1977, Dr. Waxman was on the faculty of the Temple University School of Medicine, achieving the rank of Professor and Deputy Chairman of the Department of Medicine. From 1977-79, he was Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Baystate Medical Center (Springfield, Mass.) and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. From 1979-1996, he was The Paul J. Johnson Chairman, Department of Medicine, Albert Einstein Medical Center, and Professor and Senior Associate Chairman of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine.
Since 1996, Dr. Waxman has been Senior Vice President for Education of the American College of Physicians (ACP). The Education Division which he directs is responsible for the Internal Medicine Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP), the Internal Medicine In-Training Examination, the Annual Session of the ACP, approximately twenty post-graduate courses, the clinical practice guidelines program of the College, the Community-Based Teaching Program for medical students and residents, a number of electronic products (both CD-ROM and www-based), and an educational research and development program.
He is a member of the USMLE Step 2 Committee and the Research Advisory Committee of the National Board of Medical Examiners and was previously chair of the Step 2 Medicine Test Committee. Dr. Waxman was President of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (1993-94) and was Chairman of the Federated Council for Internal Medicine (1993-94). From 1987-1995, he was Secretary-Treasurer of the Pennsylvania Society of Hematology-Oncology.
Dr. Waxman’s research is in the area of computer-assisted diagnosis, and he is the editor of the Meditel adult computer-assisted diagnosis system. |
