Doing the Right Thing: Diagnostic Radiology, Radiation Risk and Patient Safety

The goal of this webinar is to improve primary care physicians’ knowledge and utilization of appropriate high tech imaging studies in order to limit patients’ exposure to radiation.

The educational objectives of this webinar are for learners to:

Outline the concerns about radiation risk and patient safety in radiology.
Incorporate considerations of radiation risk when determining if imaging is required and, if so, in selecting the most appropriate imaging modality for specific patients and conditions.
Apply tools and techniques, such as provider-based guidelines and insurer-based reviews and incentives, to inform and manage the use of high tech imaging.
Identify the relative radiation exposure of different imaging modalities.

Faculty:

Samson Munn

Dr. Samson Munn is Associate Radiologist-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center, and Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Radiology at Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Munn received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. After a year in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital (now part of Boston Medical Center), he completed a residency in the combined Tufts / Boston VA Medical Center radiology program, followed by a fellowship–chief-residency year in imaging at the Boston VA Medical Center. Dr. Munn is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology, and has additional experience in nuclear medicine. He spent 14 years in private practice, followed by seven years in combined academic–community practice, and then four years in HMO practice. He has been Chief of Radiology at Waltham Hospital, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital and the Santa Rosa Medical Center of Kaiser Permanente (northern California). He rejoined the Tufts faculty and staff in mid-2008 as Vice Chair. Dr. Munn’s publications are varied; he has special interests in imaging utilization, informed consent and group dynamics.

Niamh Carroll

Dr. Niamh Carroll graduated from University College Cork Medical School in 2002. She worked in internal medicine in Ireland for two years before coming to the US for residency. Dr Carroll completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Lahey Clinic, Burlington, MA, and continued her training as Chief Resident at the Lahey Clinic. She is currently a primary care physician at Tufts Medical Center. She has a particular interest in women’s health, diabetes and geriatrics.
