Goal

This course is designed to help physicians understand the importance of communication in patient care and to help physicians improve their communication skills and effectiveness. Additionally, it will teach performance improvement techniques, including teamwork, so that physicians will be able to monitor and correct new issues involving communication challenges that may arise over time.

Educational Objectives

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

Understand the importance of communication and its impact on patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes, team function, and risk management.
Identify their communication strengths and weaknesses.
Identify the resources available to them to improve their communication skills.
Demonstrate skills and techniques to strengthen communication.
Identify obstacles that impair their ability to communicate well
and develop strategies to overcome them.
Develop a plan to improve their communication skills.
Develop a mechanism to monitor the success of their improvement plan and incorporate the feedback received in order to support continuous improvement.
Improve patient satisfaction and reduce patient complaints
related to communication.
