Session I —
Educational Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the positive outcomes associated with effective provider–patient communication, including increased patient and provider satisfaction, improved patient understanding, adherence and medical outcomes, and decreased malpractice litigation;
  • Describe the 3 functions of the medical interview;
  • Demonstrate self-awareness of communication skills;
  • Demonstrate effective use of a set of communication skills which improve medical interviewing and enhance patient satisfaction and other positive patient and provider outcomes;
  • Demonstrate effective use of communication skills and protocols that will
    facilitate positive outcomes in challenging provider - patient interactions.
