Approximately 70 program directors and GME faculty from 16
institutions in the Southeast U.S. recently attended a THCI
faculty development workshop "Teaching and Evaluating
Required Competencies in Systems-based Practice and Practice-based
Learning and Improvement" to learn more about these new
ACGME competencies.
The University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville
hosted the one-day program, which included small-group and
case-based learning. Using presentations, interactive breakout
groups, and debriefing sessions, the workshop defined the
aims and content and helped attendees implement strategies
to train and assess new physicians in these competency areas.
Participants said they would engage in the following action
steps as a result of the workshop:
Rewrite curricula to be competency-based
Initiate a faculty education process
Define relationships between assessment methods and competencies
Develop competency-based evaluation forms and processes
Institute a 360° evaluation and peer evaluation process
Establish portfolios for all residents
"There was great value to this program due to the quality
of the material and the quality of the THCI faculty. The meeting
was informative and very interactive, and encouraged open
discussion and free exchange of ideas between presenters and
participants." Walter Moore, MD, Assistant
Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Medical College of Georgia
