An overview of two changes initiated by ACGME: adopting a competency-based model of training, and integrating new knowledge and skills in Systems-based Practice and Practice-based Learning and Improvement; implications for programs and faculty, and opportunities to enhance the experience and outcomes of residency training.

Workshop I: Case-based Session on Competencies of Systems-based Practice and Practice-based Learning and Improvement
Attendees in 2 smaller groups, taught by 2 different faculty

Interactive exercises prompting attendees to identify learning objectives, teaching opportunities, and assessment criteria associated with these two new competencies.

Workshop II A: Systems-based Practice – Best Practices and Resources for Training, or
Practice-based Learning and Improvement - Best Practices and Resources for Training

Attendees split between the two sessions

Discussions and demonstrations of approaches, techniques, and resources for adapting current training or creating new learning activities to teach the practice elements that comprise these two competencies. Includes quality improvement, evidence-based medicine, cost-effective care for patients and populations, collaborative care and teamwork, and understanding the health care system as context for practice. Resources to be presented include the THCI Curriculum Guide on Managing Care: A Systems-based Approach, and online learning modules.

Participatory discussion and “gap analysis” of challenges facing programs, ideas for change, and next steps.
